Burma: Displacement, environment, labour concerns raised over Italian-Thai Development Company's Dawei deep-sea port project

Two news reports appeared in December 2011 citing alleged abuses – including displacement, environmental degradation and labour concerns -- in connection with the Dawei (Tavoy) deep-sea port development project on the Burmese-Thai border being developed by the Italian-Thai Development Company. Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Italian-Thai Development Company to respond; the company sent the following response: "...As part of the feasibility study for the Dawei development project, extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) based on OECD standards are being conducted together with Social Impact Assessment (SIA). In addition, a comprehensive Environmental Management and Monitoring plan will be put in place...For the villagers protest and local resident’s issue, ITD would like to feed back that ITD and DDC are committed to being a responsible corporate global citizen in all locals where they operate..."
