Cambodia: Footwear factory workers protest dismissals after forming independent union, alleging anti-union retaliation, incl. co. comment

Allegations

Workers at Qi Heng Xin Factory Co., Ltd in Cambodia have protested after being suspended or dismissed, allegedly for forming an independent union. Representatives from the Federation Union of Free and Independent (FUFI) claim the company used a lack of work as a pretext for dismissals, which followed the establishment of the union. Workers have demanded reinstatement and employment benefits, including annual bonuses and allowances. FUFI alleges the company pressured workers to leave the independent union and join a company-backed one, dismissing those who refused. The company cited reduced orders and profits due to a border conflict as reasons for not reinstating workers, but FUFI claims evidence shows the factory continued to recruit new workers. Labour rights organisation CENTRAL has called for dialogue and reinstatement, urging respect for Cambodian labour law and international standards on freedom of association.
