Cambodia: Garment factory under investigation after several workers fainted and one worker died

Ministry of Environment officials are examining the air quality at a factory in Kandal province, following reports that a worker, one of several who fainted and collapsed …, has died.

The ministry announced … that a team from the General Department of Environmental Protection is investigating environmental conditions inside and around the Cambo Unisoll Ltd factory, in Khsach Kandal district’s Prey Chas village, in Vihear Suor commune.

Eleven workers reportedly collapsed, with one 32-year-old woman passing away after being transported to hospital.

“Specialised officials, in cooperation with relevant authorities, have conducted inspections of air quality and installed air quality monitoring equipment at the factory. The team is currently collecting related information on-site in order to assess potential environmental causes and impacts on workers’ health,” said the ministry.

The inspection was carried out under the direct instructions of environment minister Eang Sophalleth, with the goal of identifying any possible environmental pollution that may have occurred in the factory area…

Far Saly, president of the National Trade Unions Coalition (NTUC), identified the deceased worker as Yim Rin.

He stated that after Rin collapsed at her workstation, colleagues immediately provided first aid and moved her to the factory clinic. However, her condition did not improve, and she was transported by factory vehicle to a nearby hospital, where she unfortunately passed away…
