Dairy farm workers hold picket at Belfast Hannaford
[...] New England worker-led organization Migrant Justice has been hosting pickets against Hannaford across the state. The pickets are part of their program Milk With Dignity, that partners with over 50 local dairy farms to ensure ethical and fair pay and treatment of workers. The employee of one Vermont dairy farm that Hannaford buys milk from ... said that living conditions on the farm are cramped and overcrowded, and the farm owners retaliated against workers who complained about the conditions. [...] In response, Ericka Dodge, Hannaford’s director of external communications and community relations says: “Hannaford has been clear that we will not join Migrant Justice’s Milk with Dignity program, in part because it is limited in both scope and impact. The concerns facing agricultural workers--and migrant workers in particular--are systemic, complex and extend well beyond Hannaford’s private label dairy supply chain. . . While we share the goal of safeguarding the dignity and well-being of farm workers, we differ with Migrant Justice in our approach of achieving a sustainable, long-term solution. We are continuing our critical work toward this goal with industry partners. Hannaford has a long history of success as a leader in solving complex supply chain issues—and we have done so with partners who are respectfully and collaboratively engaged in problem-solving. Unfortunately, from our perspective, this is not the approach that Migrant Justice has taken with us.” [...]
