Rescue efforts are continuing at a Siberian coal mine [operated by Raspadskaya coal company] where twin explosions this weekend killed at least 32 people and injured dozens more…Some 60 people are believed to be still trapped in the mine, where rescue efforts have been hindered by dangerously high levels of flammable gas...Raspadskaya officials insisted today that methane levels in the mine prior to the first explosion were normal…Vladimir Goryachkin, the mine's deputy director, also defended the mine's ventilation system, saying it was German-made and had been in operation only 10 months…The Raspadskaya coal company, which is partly owned by steel maker Evraz, has already pledged millions of rubles in compensation to victims' families…
