Inhabitants of Juan C. Bonilla in Zacatepec, Puebla, Mexico have been protesting against the contamination of the River Metlapanapa due to the construction of industrial drainage. At least 20 companies intend to divert their toxic waste to the river Metlapanapa according to those who defend the river. On 30th October 2019, those protesting against the construction of the draining project were attacked by rubber bullets and tear gas by the militarised police force (Guardia Nacional). National organisations have appealed to the local and federal government to ensure the protection of those defending the river.
