According to a report from Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s new Global Safety Evidence Centre, manufacturing workers are increasingly at risk from harm posed by severe weather, high temperatures and water shortages.
The Foundation’s World Risk Poll shows that one in five workers globally experienced harm at work in the last two years – and 15% of workers in manufacturing...According to the new report, 4.3 out of every 100,000 manufacturing workers experience a fatal injury.
Climate change impacts threaten to increase this rate of harm, and rising temperatures are one of the areas of concern the report outlines. Extreme heat exposure increases the risk of work injuries by 1% for every 1°C increase, and 17.4% in heatwaves, especially in subtropical climates...The report states that outdoor workers in agriculture and construction, as well as indoor workers, especially in poorly ventilated environments, are most affected by excessive heat...
...those in manufacturing were found to be particularly at risk of harm from increased machinery and factory wear and tear as a result of higher temperatures and humidity. This is especially the case for garment and textile workers, those operating heavy machinery or chemicals, and workers in regions most affected by rising temperatures and flooding such as Sub-Saharan Africa, South and South-East Asia, China, Mexico and the Middle East...
