In our conversations with the Guatemalan government, we have expressed our view that the government should investigate the attack on Mr. González and all acts of violence against human rights defenders. We will continue to advocate our position on this.

More than 190 organizations denounced an armed attack against Guatemalan land defender Julio David González Arango, a leader in the peaceful resistance to Pan American Silver’s Escobal mine. Julio was shot and wounded on January 16 at his home. Since the attack, two other members of the peaceful resistance have received threatening messages saying they’ll be next.

This Saturday morning, on January 16, the Xinka Parliament reported that leader Julio David González was attacked at his home, located in Mataquescuintla, Jalapa [Guatemala]. González was shot and subsequently transported to a nearby medical centre. Kelvin Jiménez, a lawyer and member of the Xinka Parliament, noted that since last year, the Xinka Parliament has denounced multiple threats against González and others who form part of the organized resistance in Mataquescuintla, Jalapa.
