Guapinol is a community where the people have been subject to persecution for defending the environment from the harms caused by the mining company Inversiones Los Pinares, which irregularly obtained an environmental license, as reported by the Common Property Committee. In response, its inhabitants, supported by organizations from Tocoa, Colón, established a camp on August 1, 2018, demanding the municipal mayor of that term to hold an open town hall to consult with the population.
