India: Explosion at Sigachi Industries pharmaceutical plant kills 40 & injures over 33, mostly migrant workers; families allege safety violations as authorities launch investigation; incl. co. comment

On the morning of 30 June 2025, a massive explosion occurred at one of Sigachi Industries’ pharmaceutical plants in Telangana, near Hyderabad. So far, 40 people have been confirmed dead and over 33 injured, most of them migrant workers from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.

The authorities have launched an official investigation through a five-member committee to determine the cause of the blast, which remains unknown. Sigachi Industries stated that the incident was not caused by a reactor explosion. Officials will also examine the company’s employment of low-wage workers in hazardous operations.

Preliminary findings suggest the explosion may have been triggered by a massive temperature build-up.

The victims' families allege safety violations by the company, including ignoring warnings about unsafe machinery and cost-cutting at the expense of worker safety. Experts later also allege a lack of safety protocols.

The Telangana government has filed a case of culpable homicide against Sigachi Industries and has ordered the company to compensate the affected workers and families.

Sigachi Industries said the plant operations are temporarily suspended, and it will provide ex gratia payments and medical assistance for the injured, and Rs 1 crore in compensation to the families of the deceased.
