Japan: SMILE-UP. (formerly Johnny & Associates) sues alleged abuse victim, denying obligation to pay compensation

Johnny & Associates

"SMILE-UP.補償金訴訟 男性側争わず終結 “心理的負担を考慮,” 10 February 2025

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

SMILE-UP., a company that changed its name from the former Johnny & Associates and is currently providing compensation on the issue of sexual assaults, has filed a lawsuit against a man, claiming that it is not obligated to pay compensation to him who reported being a victim of abuse to NHK. SMILE-UP. claims it was unable to confirm the facts.

At the first hearing, the man's indicated they would not fight in court, citing the heavy mental burden of continuing the trial, and the trial came to an end.

NHK has been investigating the matter while taking human rights into consideration, and has concluded that the credibility of the fact remains unchanged, based on the consistency of the testimonies and accounts of those involved with the situation at the time.
