Kenya: Leader seeks information on pending compensation for locals displaced 50 years ago to pave way for fluorspar mining

"MP seeks answers on people yet to be compensated for land surrendered"

Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo wants the government to make public that people who surrendered their land for a government project 50 years ago are yet to be compensated. The local community surrendered the land for mining in Elgeyo-Marakwet in 1974.In his statement, Kimaiyo demanded the details of the persons and organisations involved. He insisted on the provision of the status of compensation indicating the time upon receiving the compensation....

The Fluorspar Mining Company Limited was announced to be under the government in 2018. A task force would see out the compensation of over 4,000 landowners who were displaced to make way for the company's mining activities in the 1970s. However, disputes among residents over the mode of compensation mainly caused the crumbling of the payment.
