Latin America: Indigenous and afro-descendant communities present declarations to launch the V Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights

V Foro Regional

During two events prior to the V Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights in Latin America and the Caribbean, indigenous peoples and people of African descent from the region met to discuss the challenges posed by the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing problems they face due to business activity in their territories.

They discussed the lack of implementation of ILO Convention 169 and the lack of genuine consultation and free, prior and informed consent processes. They also discussed the lack of mechanisms to guarantee the real participation of these communities in decision making on economic investment projects in their territories.

Indigenous peoples and people of African descent demand that national and transnational companies that threaten the effective enjoyment of their human rights respect their internationally recognised rights.

The V Regional Forum began with the reading of declarations by indigenous afro-descendants communities; both declarations are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
