More than 1,000 companies pause advertising on Facebook as part of civil society campaign to stop spread of hate & discrimination on the platform

On June 17, 2020 the Stop Hate for Profit campaign asked companies to act against hate and disinformation being spread by Facebook by temporarily pausing advertising on Facebook and Instagram. The campaign includes ADL, Color of Change, Common Sense, Free Press, LULAC, Mozilla, the NAACP, National Hispanic Media Coalition and Sleeping Giants. Recommendations from the campaign for Facebook include:

  • Establish and empower permanent civil rights infrastructure including C-suite level executive with civil rights expertise to evaluate products and policies for discrimination, bias, and hate.
  • Submit to regular, third party, independent audits of identity-based hate and misinformation with summary results published on a publicly accessible website.
  • Provide audit of and refund to advertisers whose ads were shown next to content that was later removed for violations of terms of service.
  • Find and remove public and private groups focused on white supremacy, militia, antisemitism, violent conspiracies, Holocaust denialism, vaccine misinformation, and climate denialism.
  • Stop recommending or otherwise amplifying groups or content from groups associated with hate, misinformation or conspiracies to users.

The full list of recommendations is available here. As of 7 July 2020, Sleeping Giants has tracked more than 1,000 companies that have paused advertising on Facebook, including Unilever, Verizon, Starbucks, and Coca-Cola.
