"AQUA SHOE Factory Overtime", 29 October 2024

The workers at the AQUA SHOE factory in Mya Sein Rang Industrial Zone are forced to work overtime more than the legal limit, making it difficult for them to travel and return... home...according to the workers.

...the factory has been [operating] until 8 pm every day. On Saturdays, it has also been [operating] until 7 pm. There has been no day off this month...I [get] home at 10:30. It is not safe for safety reasons,” said a female factory worker.

For almost a year in 2024, she worked overtime until 7 pm every day...

The factory is located in the Mya Sein Industrial Zone in front of the Dagon-Eyar Highway, and the workers come from Twante, Khat Taya, and Htan Tabin.

“It took us 9 and a half hours to reach the factory by bus. Some from Htan Tabin had to take a boat. Their hardships were great. If we had to walk, we had to take a boat from home to cross the river. In the morning, we had to get up at 3 and a half to get ready to go to work. We couldn’t be later than 6 hours to catch the ferry. We had to take the boat on a monthly basis. Those from Twante also had to take the ferry back very late..." said one worker...
