Mexico: NGO report documents self-consultation on mega pig farms in Yucatán

Artículo 19

The "Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez" Human Rights Center (Centro Prodh) and the organization Artículo 19 prepared the report "Mission of Observation of the Self-consultation on the Mega Pig Farms in Yucatán" and called for respect for the rights of indigenous peoples. On July 25, 2021, the Mayan communities of Kinchil, San Fernando (Maxcanú) and Celestún in the state of Yucatán, in their free exercise of autonomy and self-determination as indigenous peoples, called for the celebration of a self-consultation to discuss and decide on the presence and continuity of work of the pork companies operating in the area.

The United Nations Human Rights Office in Mexico and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) also participated in the event, in addition to Centro Prodh and Artículo 19. The report was sent to the UN and IACHR Special Rapporteurs on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Freedom of Expression, as well as to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association.
