Nepal: People Forum outlines advocacy efforts & impacts for migrant worker protections amid COVID-19

People Forum for Human Rights (People Forum) has published a report summarizing its policy and advocacy efforts during the lockdown (April 2020-November 2020). The report outlines the initiatives carried out by the People Forum for the protection of Nepali migrant workers' rights, and the outcomes of these initiatives with regards to reforming Nepal's law, policy and programs to mitigate the adversities created by COVID-19 on migrant workers' rights.

Among the initiatives undertaken by the People Forum in May 2020 is a policy paper providing recommendations for the relevant governmental agencies for the repatriation of and reintegration of migrant workers. The paper was developed based on best practices of other countries of origin; and consultations with international networks, institutions, and stakeholders. People Forum has also accelerated advocacy efforts since April 2020 to mobilize all stakeholders towards reforming Nepal government’s policies, programs and response mechanisms that meant to meet migrant workers' urgent needs as well as to inform civil society on the progress that has been achieved at the international level with regards to wage theft.

In addition, the People Forum coordinated with embassies, journalists, Non-Resident Nepali Association, and international organizations to provide legal advice and services to migrant workers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Malaysia, during the lockdown period between March 2020 and November 2020 and beyond. The majority of complaints received by the People Forum during the said period concerned air-ticket reimbursement, wage theft, calls for rescue and repatriation, and fraud.; 886 migrant workers received legal aid.
