Europe: Restaurant chain accused of subjecting Indian workers to 80-hour work weeks, intimidation and trafficking

Allegations

Dutch authorities, with support from Europol, led an international investigation into human trafficking for labour exploitation in the restaurant sector. The investigation targeted an Indian restaurant chain, with locations in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France, and Switzerland, for allegedly forcing mainly Indian migrant workers to work up to 16 hours per day, underpaying them, and preventing them from leaving the country.

The workers worked for up to 80 hours a week, performed heavy physical labour, and were subjected to penalties for early departure. They and their families were subjected to intimidation and threats of violence.

The criminal network reportedly recruited more than 70 migrants as specialist chefs, but employed them as dishwashers, cleaners, waiting staff, or restaurant managers instead.
