Oxfam highlights the vulnerabilities faced by women in global supermarket supply chains

Oxfam's 2018 report, Ripe for Change highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by women in global supply chains as a result of often being in low-paid jobs with little security in the agri-food sector. Supermarkets have made little progress to improve the situation of women workers as evidenced through the poor scores of a number of supermarkets across gender indicators in Oxfam's global Supermarket Scorecard. Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have heightened pre-existing inequalities in global food and beverage supply chains while the food retail sector has largely seen and benefitted from unprecedented growth. Oxfam's research highlights the dissonance between supermarkets paying out billions to shareholders while the suffering of women in their supply chains is intensified.
