Pakistan: New trade union confederation vows to resist repression and fight for workers' rights

Pakistan’s newly formed Trade Unions Confederation of Pakistan (TUCP), an alliance of 12 major unions, has pledged to resist government policies that violate workers’ rights. TUCP representatives, including APNEC’s Dara Zafar, criticised laws like Peca for suppressing freedom of expression and workers’ protests. The confederation demands an end to contract labour, a living wage, and protection against harassment and gender discrimination, particularly for women workers. They also call for the registration of all workers in social security and pension schemes, and oppose privatisation. TUCP has declared October 20 as Workers Action Day to mobilise nationwide in defence of labour rights.
