Peru: Government starts dialogue to address social conflict in the Southern Mining Corridor over impacts of Chinese mining company Las Bambas

This meeting represented a preparatory meeting between this sector of the population and the commission of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), to inaugurate the dialogue table that will take place on Saturday 28 August...Although, as reported by Red Muqui [see note in Spanish], the communities expected the presence of the president of the Council of Ministers, Guido Bellido, at the preparatory meeting, this did not happen. However, the PCM announced that Bellido would be at the dialogue table on 28 August in the community of Huininquiri... After approximately six hours of discussion at the preparatory meeting, the representatives of the participant eight Quechua communities and the Executive agreed to set up four working sub-commissions to address the demands of the communities regarding the mining corridor... On 23 July this year, the communities of Chumbivilcas began a road blockade and protests to demand the annulment of R. M. N° 372-2018-MTCM. M. N° 372-2018-MTC, which usurps the land and declares the communal roads as National Roads. These roads, re-categorised as national roads, are used by vehicles that cause - to varying degrees - noise, air, water and soil pollution in the communities located in the districts of Velille, Ccapacmarca, Santo Tomás, Chamaca, Livitaca and Colquemarca, as stated in the report of the Environmental Evaluation and Oversight Agency (OEFA) [in Spanish] in 2019...
