Indonesia: Supreme Court rules in favour of communities' petition to revoke environmental permit for Dairi zinc-lead mine
In its 12 August ruling, the Indonesian Supreme Court upheld a lower court's earlier decision that the environmental permit for the Dairi zinc-lead mine should never have been granted in the first place, given experts' warnings of potentially catastrophic fallout from the project's location on an active tectonic fault. China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (NFC), DPM’s parent company, said the court’s ruling might affect the project’s progress, but insisted it would go on nonetheless.

On 12 August 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the communities, concluding that in providing the permit, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry had failed to implement good governance, that community consultation was inadequate, and that the environmental approval must be revoked.
