“Deepfake sex crimes lead to 682 arrests last year… Korean national police urge interpol collaboration”, 13 February 2025

A total of 682 individuals were arrested by the police last year in relation to sex crimes involving deepfake technology, which uses artificial intelligence to create synthetic images and voices. The National Police Agency has called for international cooperation, urging INTERPOL to address deepfake-related sex crimes collectively.

On 13 February, the police confirmed that of the 682 suspects apprehended in the past year, 40 had been detained in custody. A significant majority—80.4% (548 people)—were minors, with 104 of them falling under the category of "juvenile delinquents" (those under the age of 14 and exempt from criminal prosecution). Of the remaining suspects, 107 were in their twenties, 20 were in their thirties, four were in their forties, and three were over fifty years old….

A total of 1,202 deepfake-related sex crime cases were recorded by the police last year…

The National Police Agency has also highlighted the growing global threat posed by these crimes, urging greater international collaboration through INTERPOL.
