UK: Cleaners strike as City of London Corporation takes decision to outsource contracts to OCS, firm with history of "poor working practices"; incl. co. non-response
Members of the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU) staged strike action in March 2025 over decisions by the City of London Corporation to outsource their contracts. The union alleges workers had no say in the decision, which it was feared would lead to worsened working conditions.
Our members have had no say in this decision, yet they are the ones who will bear the consequences. After being ignored and left in uncertainty, they are taking a stand.Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union
GMB Union said OCS, the company to whom contracts are planned to be transferred on 1 March, had a history of poor working practices. Cleaning staff had won a temporary reprieve in February after raising concerns about the transfer at a recent Joint Consultative Committee meeting.
In April, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited OCS to respond to the reporting. OCS did not respond.
