Educators, a school principal and students who survived the February 2026 school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia (Canada), have filed 30 new lawsuits against OpenAI in a federal court in California, where the company is headquartered, seeking damages for physical and psychological injuries. The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI's safety team repeatedly asked that Canadian authorities be notified about the shooter's activity on its AI chatbot ChatGPT months before the attack, following conversations that allegedly involved violent scenarios, but that these requests were overruled by senior company officials. The new lawsuits follow seven earlier cases filed in California by families of victims of the shooting.
OpenAI has disputed the allegations concerning its internal decision-making. Its chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, said that the company has teams working to establish standards and processes for reporting cases to law enforcement while protecting users' privacy and security. He also rejected claims that political or public relations considerations influenced decisions about whether to refer users' activity to law enforcement. OpenAI has previously acknowledged that it banned the shooter's account in June 2025, but said the activity did not meet the threshold required for referral to law enforcement at the time.
