Although waiting final conclusions from the (Ministerio Publico) Public Ministry’s technical team, the Office of Forensic Medicine (la Dirección de Medicina Forense) has concluded that arsenic, mercury and lead have been found in samples taken from people who live in the Siria Valley where Entremares [Goldcorp Inc.] operates. Over the past years, people living in the Siria Valley have been denouncing that the open pit mining of [Entremares...] has caused a series of harms to the people of the region...Entremares...has argued that diseases in the municipality of San Ignacio are not a result of mining but rather are due to poverty, to malnutrition, to mosquito bites and poor hygiene.
