Lebanon: ILO analyses impact of COVID-19 on migrant workers & publishes recommendations for employers

The brief outlines the current economic, social and health risks and challenges faced by migrant workers including domestic workers during the Covid-19 pandemic in Lebanon. This includes, among other risks, a termination of jobs without prior notice and the ability to return home, a deduction or non-payment of wages, a high risk of infection with the virus among migrant workers while it is still uncertain whether undocumented workers are included in the free-testing for Covid-19 and an inability to afford the high prices of hygiene and food products.

The brief provides also a set of recommendations for employer to protect the rights of their migrant workers during the pandemic in accordance with the principles of gender equality, integrity. This include, among other things, a full payment of wages, providing all migrant workers with access to health care, payment of sick leave, sharing information with all migrant works about the Covid-19 pandemic and the future of their work in a language they understand.
