Lombok Tengah farmers protest against land conversion [Indonesia]

Around 150 farmers taking part in the Community-based Forest (HKm) program in Mareje Bongak forest areas...staged a demonstration in front of the...governor's office in Mataram…They were protesting against the conversion of their agricultural land into industrial forest concession (HTI) areas managed by a private company. The farmers…rejected the expropriation by a private company of the land they have managed since 1998…Since the end of December 2012…PT Sadhana Afir Nusa (SAN) began activities in the forest areas, saying it had obtained an HTI license from the Forestry Ministry. “...We are urging them to stop the land-clearing because it’s destroying our livelihoods,” said [a local resident]...[Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited PT Sadhana Arifnusa to respond.
