Major pollution spill 'every other day' in China

China's breakneck growth took its worst ever toll on the environment last year, the state media said today quoting a report that revealed serious pollution spills are occurring almost every other day...Last year, [SEPA] received a record 600,000 complaints about pollution, including 161 accidents that it classified as "serious"...Many of the spills were caused by companies and local authorities that flouted central government regulations...Mr Pan revealed that four power producers...would be barred from launching new projects until they have cleaned up their existing facilities...Four of the country's five main utilities were blacklisted: Datang International Power Generation, China Huaneng Group, China Huadian Corporation and China Guodian Corporation.
