On 17 August 2012, police opened fire on striking miners at Lonmin's Marikana mine killing 34 miners and injuring many others. On 23 August 2012, the South African government established a judicial commission of inquiry led by Judge Ian Farlam(Marikana Commission of Inquiry) to investigate massacre. The judicial commission is mandated to probe the conduct of Lonmin, the South Africa Police Service, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union and the National Union of Mineworkers. It will establish if any action or omission by any of these entities directly or indirectly caused the loss of life or damage to persons or property.
