Migrants harvest tiny raise, big win; McDonald's case could set standard [USA]

McDonald's Corp. agreed on Monday to pay a penny per pound more to field hands who pick the restaurant chain's tomatoes...[which] will put more money in the pockets of underpaid migrants... [The] deal is being characterized...as a template for future negotiations between worker groups and other restaurant and grocery chains to push for improved working conditions in agricultural fields... McDonald's...[and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers] will work together to develop a code of conduct that McDonald's said it hopes can be extended to produce pickers nationwide... This new code...[adds] worker monitoring and inspection as well as outside compliance checks. [also refers to previous similar agreement with Taco Bell & Pizza Hut (both part of Yum Brands)]
