Mining rights case ‘affects food security’ [So. Africa]

Farmers organisation AgriSA has entered the court dispute between mining company Maccsand and the Western Cape, saying it could affect food security in SA. The case, which will be heard by the Constitutional Court this month, could clarify exactly which environmental laws mining firms must satisfy in order to be granted a mining right...AgriSA said that not applying the act to mining activities "infringes or threatens" the constitutional right of access to sufficient food and water....[T]he effect of rapidly increasing mining activities held significant environmental risks for food production, said AgriSA’s Johannes van der Merwe...The resultant loss of sustainable land led to less food being produced, which, in turn, caused higher food prices "that impact on the poor" [he said].
