[Excerpt translation from Spanish provided by Business and Human Rights Resource Centre]

The proposal by the congressman from the stand of New Peru, Richard Arce, to approve an Amnesty Law for the Fuerabamba community members created the opposition by the National Mining Society, Petroleum and Energy business association (SNMPE), as they considered it as an attempt against the rule of law…”No one is above the law, which is equal for everyone. Establishing norms with a proper name that seek to give a preferring treatment to those who infringe the law, would set a precedent of disastrous consequences for the governance of the country, when we see an upscaling violence seeking to paralyse the mining zones and petroleum camps, harming all Peruvians”, says the president of SNMPE, Manuel Fumagalli Drago…Along that line, the association expressed its concerns and rejection against positions that, from their point of view, seek conditioning the continuation of dialogue in Fuerabamba for the approval of the amnesty Law that leaves without effect the allegations against those that have participated in acts of violence.
