Mozambique: Govt. to set up domestic diamond certification scheme as consumers become more socially responsible

"Mozambique to set up executive secretariat for diamond certification", 3 December 2018.

Mozambique will set up a an executive secretariat for diamond certification early next year, as part of a strategy to avoid the risk of seeing increasingly demanding consumers spurn natural stones in favour of cheaper synthetic diamonds. According to Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, the body will be in charge of certifying the origin of the diamonds that occur in its national territory. Tonela also confirmed that Mozambique is already a signatory to the Kimberley Agreement, which will allow the country to explore, export and sell diamonds in the international market...While the Kimberley Process is generally credited with curtailing the role diamonds once played in the funding of wars, critics say it has been ineffective in curbing other serious violence.
