Myanmar: 12 out of 93 farmers receive compensation for lands given to cement companies; others want substitute lands

"Kyaukse farmers call for fair compensation", 13 October 2017

Farmers are demanding fair compensation for farmland confiscated to build three cement factories in Kyaukse township...

In 2004, the government seized more than 400 acres of lands owned by 93 farmers...

In 2007, farmers were forced to accept K70,000 for the land with stones and K100,000 for land without stones, said U Win Naing, a farmer from Kyauk Phyar village.

The farmlands were then allocated to AAA, Myanmar Elephant and Tiger Head cement factories.

Twelve out of 93 farmers who hadn’t received compensation were given K700,000 per acre...

“There are about 100 acres of unused lands after the construction of the three factories. Compensations are not guaranteed. Therefore, we want substitute lands. We can’t work since they seized the lands,” said Ko Zaw Htike, a farmer from Kyauk Phyar village.
