Myanmar: Garment workers of foreign-run firms decry poor working conditions & low wages

"Myanmar garment workers protest poor working conditions", 29 January 2020

Garment workers at three foreign-run firms in Yangon marched to City Hall to decry poor working conditions.

Ma Aye Thandar Win, chair of the labour union at Hunter Myanmar garment firm, said...the garment firms had violated the rights of workers to organise and protest by dismissing their leaders.

"I think they dismissed our leaders because they want to abolish labour unions," she said. "That's why we're protesting."

The protesters urged labour arbitrators to take action against employers who dismiss workers despite signing an employment contract. They also urged labour inspectors to regularly inspect their workplaces to ensure they are in compliance with the law.

Ma Aye Thuzar, a worker at Gust Myanmar garment firm, said she joined to protest because of very low wages paid to workers.
