Myanmar: Shoe factory workers protest for unpaid bonus & wage increase

Hundreds of workers at Li Kyan Footwear factory in a Yangon industrial zone have gone on strike to demand benefits guaranteed under labour law, a leader of their union said.

Aung Ko Ko Zaw said the factory, which produces JOVE brand footwear in Shwe Lin Pan industrial zone in Hlaing Tharyar township, does not pay its workers an annual bonus and leave without pay for those attending classes.

The workers urged the management to increase the daily wage for workers from K5000 to K8000.

"The employers were refused their annual performance bonus this year," Aung Ko Ko Zaw said. "Also, nearly 50 of its more than 1900 employees are students."
