Norway: Report urges govt. to manage decline of fossil fuel industry within climate limits while ensuring just transition for workers & communities

In December 2015, world governments agreed in Paris to limit global average temperature rise to well below 2 degrees celsius, and to strive to limit it to 1.5 degrees celsius. This report examines the implications of these climate boundaries for fossil fuel production in Norway... Norway has an historic opportunity to lead by becoming the first fossil fuel producing nation to announce its intention to manage the decline of its production within climate limits. As soon as possible, Norway should:

  • Freeze further leases or permits for new oil and gas extraction projects or transportation infrastructure that would incentivize additional exploration.

  • Publicly commit to managing the decline of the fossil fuel industry within the Paris goals of 1.5 degrees celsius or well below 2 degrees celsius.

  • Redefine global climate leadership by setting a global precedent to manage the decline of existing production in line with climate safe limits while ensuring a just transition for affected workers and communities...
