[PDF] 2nd UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, final day in brief (Geneva, 4 Dec)

Despite the early morning start at the final day of the 2nd Annual UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, the atmosphere remained vibrant, and participants continued to be highly engaged in discussions...Panellists at the trafficking in persons session focused on anti-trafficking approaches taken by Brazil, US, and the ILO, complemented by interventions from the floor by Qatar, Yemen, Philippines, and the EU...A key take-away from the session about the future of multi-stakeholder initiatives was whether they can evolve beyond serving as temporary fixes in response to specific issues or tragedies and how to build trust among different stakeholders while maintaining a high level of standards and accountability...The National Action Plan (NAP) session felt particularly tight on time considering the level of interest, but was insightful to hear representatives from Spain and Switzerland on the panel discuss their experience developing NAPs...Key points from the children’s rights session included (1) the acknowledgment that voluntary initiatives cannot serve as substitutes for regulations and deeper integration of children’s rights into firms’ operations, (2) companies and governments must go beyond the “do not harm” approach and proactively protect children’s rights, and (3) a need for governments, businesses, civil society and other actors to collaborate on implementation...
