Peru: Apurimac local communities denounce chemical spill in zone under State of emergency over conflict with Las Bambas mining project

This event has raised concerns among the population. Approximately, the spilt liquid expels a strong smell causing headache and dizziness.  More worrisome is that this has happened in a place that is no more than 100 meters far from the Yuricancha educational institution, where children were obliged to evict…Edwin Hillca, community secretary of Yuricancha, noted that this is not the first time that these incidents happen and regretted the scarce information available for the population.  He referred also to a previous event in Pisacasa, in which the Police and the company took samples but so far they have not received information on the outcomes; for this reason, they ask the Attorney General or the Fiscal Environmental Authority to go to their place because people do not trust other actors involved…They said they do not forget that the road transporting minerals from Las Bambas mine [part of MMG, part of China Minmetals], causes severe harms to the population, once the Impact Assessment study was modified. Before, this project stipulated to take the mineral through a mining pipeline but with the modification, the mineral is now transported by trucks and this has increased heavy transit in an unpaved road, continuously raising dust, producing seismic movements in their houses and acoustic contamination…Currently, this stretch of the road that belongs to the Apurimac-Cusco-Arequipa road is under State of emergency, after its last extension on April 12…
