Peru: Farmer’s “guards” to start protests over planned Rio Blanco mining projects due to risks to their livelihoods

Ayabaca Community members and their “guards” are preparing to a massive protest for the presence of the Rio Blanco mining company [part of Xiamen Zijin Tongguan Investment Development Corporation, part of Zijin Mining Group, Tongling Non-Ferrous Metals Group Holding Co. Ltd. And Xiamen C&D Cooperation Ltd] in zones of the Piura hills…the president of the United Confederation of Peasant Farmers “Guards” (Rondas) of this province, Ruben Jiménez Carrión, announced that on May 7th he will arrive in Piura to protest against the threat of mining activity…”Guards (ronderos) will not allow mining because it will impact agriculture, cattle raising and the population. It is a project planned to be implemented in zones where water sources are generated and that is our life,” he said.  He revealed that in his town there is the presence of mining promoters “that are misinforming communities on this matter.” He added that they are informing that mining activities will start at any cost in 2021.  “We prefer to die and bear with this,” he said.
