Peru: NGOs ask the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to recommend the Govt. to protect women against violence related to company operations

“Further IACHR appeal on behalf of Maxima Acuna” – 4 December 2017

The IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Spanish acronym CIDH) is being asked to intervene once again in the case of Máxima Acuña. Senora Acuña is the by now well-known peasant farmer from Tragadero Grande, Cajamarca, who has been struggling to defend her own and her community's land against the Yanacocha Mining Company [joint venture Buenaventura & Newmont]…The NGOs Grufides and Demus are now presenting a new case on behalf of Acuña in the IACHR. The case calls for a recommendation to the Peruvian state, under Peru's Law 30364, on violence against women and their family members. The Director of Demos, María Ysabel Cedano, explains that gender violence in social conflict is one of 15 forms of gender violence recognized in Law 30364…
