El grupo en defensa del Medio Ambiente EarthRights Internacional presentó hoy una demanda en nombre de la comunidad indígena Achuar de Perú contra la firma Occidental Petroleum por la supuesta contaminación del Amazonas. La demanda...acusan a la firma más conocida como Oxy de contaminar los ríos y la tierra de su comunidad durante 30 años. Los detalles de esta demanda están incluidos en el informe...'Un legado de daño'...Según el estudio, Oxy depositó un promedio de 850.000 barriles diarios de productos derivados tóxicos directamente en los ríos y las quebradas que utiliza el pueblo Achuar para beber, bañarse, lavar y pescar...También acusa de 'muerte, envenenamiento profundo y destrucción' de la vida tradicional de las comunidades. Indigenous Peruvians Sue Occidental Petroleum

EarthRights International (ERI) and the law firm Schonbrun DeSimone Seplow Harris & Hoffman LLP (SDSHH) today brought suit on behalf of twenty-five indigenous Achuar plaintiffs from the Peruvian Amazon against Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum Corp. (Oxy), alleging egregious harm caused by Oxy over a thirty-year period in the Corrientes River basin during which Oxy contaminated the rivers and lands of the indigenous Achuar communities, causing death, widespread poisoning and destruction of their way of life.

Oil company accused of dumping waste in Amazon [Peru]

[Occidental Petroleum] has been accused of contaminating…the Peruvian Amazon where it…[has] drilled for oil…creating misery for the local Achuar people and widespread lead and cadmium poisoning. A report issued by a coalition of protest groups…accused the company…of…dumping an estimated 9 billion barrels of toxic waste…directly into rivers and streams used by the Achuar…Occidental turned over the oilfield...to...Pluspetrol in 2000…but the report said the pattern of spillage and poisoning continued unabated… [also refers to Texaco, Unocal (both part of Chevron)]
