Philippines: 49 dead, missing persons remain unclear following landslide where cement company has mining rights

Recent media report posts death toll at 49 following the landslide that hit Naga City, Cebu, Philippines. The number of missing persons remain unclear. The landslide occurred on the area where Apo Land and Quarry Corp.  (ALQC) has mining rights. The company denies quarrying in the area and that it has not begun operations just yet. However, ALQC admits that some of their personnel conducted earth-moving operations for road development. Following the landslide, the government has suspended quarrying activities in select regions in the country and has specifically ordered the suspension of ALQC operations. ALQC said it will comply with the government orders and assist the families affected by the landslide.
