Policy Adviser, Tax & Inequality at Oxfam GB

Extreme inequality is one of the greatest injustices of our times.  The richest 85 people in the world have as much wealth as the poorest half of the global population, and too many rules are rigged against the poorest.  Oxfam’s new global ‘Even It Up’ campaign will work to end extreme inequality and poverty, through fairer taxation, public services and by challenging the idea that extreme inequality is inevitable.  And with your help, we can make a difference.

The role

You will support Oxfam’s policy development on inequality, with a focus on tax, both in the UK and globally.  You will work cross-departmentally with colleagues in research, private sector and UK government relation teams to jointly agree influencing strategies on tax, and work with colleagues in Oxfam International to support on key international tax justice issues and events.  You will represent Oxfam with key external stakeholders in the public, private and third sector, and manage, build and influence key relationships.  You will also anticipate, analyse and manage complex public policy issues and help deliver effective advocacy and campaigns strategies and achieve significant impact on advocacy objectives around public services.  You will carry out primary and secondary research on tax and the impact of tax abuse on inequality and poverty, and will be required to produce briefings for senior staff on tax and inequality issues.  You will support southern campaigning and advocacy, working with countries to support their advocacy and policy on inequality and tax. You will also need to keep up-to-date with key external developments in the areas of tax and inequality.

What we’re looking for

You will have a proven track record in policy-influencing work, including sound judgment under pressure, and strong experience of developing accurate power analysis, advocacy strategies, and global models of change, including awareness of political sensitivities.  You have experience and understanding of key policy areas including tax and domestic resources mobilisation, inequality, and public services.  You will have experience of research and data analysis of relevant policy issues.  You have proven success as a manager and leader, and have experience of managing relationships at a distance.  You will bring a strong background of supporting campaigning and advocacy in the global South.  You are a person who thrives on supporting and influencing others, and you enjoy working in multi-cultural teams.
