Purity Manganese miners deplore work, living conditions [Namibia]

Purity Manganese…mine’s safety manager, Immanuel Shilongo…was asked to leave the mine after he had raised concerns about the poor and inhumane living conditions…The miners have also accused the labour inspectors for visiting the offices of Purity Manganese Mine only but do not inspect the hostels…[W]orkers also claim that they are not allowed to become members of a union…The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare…ordered the employer to provide a safe working environment…adequate personal protective clothing and equipment…; ensure that the hours of work and meal times do not adversely affect the safety or health of employees as well as take any prescribed steps to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees at work...Purity Manganese executive director Esi Eretz [said:] "Shilongo’s allegations are nonsense and ridiculous claims,”...adding that there is a committee at the mine that deals with grievances not the media.
