Qatar: Liverpool FC expresses concern over migrant worker deaths ahead of Club World Cup; FIFA responded
Liverpool Football Club have set out their position regarding well-documented abuses of migrant workers' rights and deaths in Qatar. The statement from Liverpool CEO Peter Moore comes as the team prepare to play in Fifa's Club World Cup, hosted by the Gulf nation in December 2019.
Human rights organisation Fair/Square had previously invited Liverpool FC to make a public commitment on the issues. In response, Moore stated that Liverpool had sought reassurances from the Qatar Supreme Committee specifically regarding the death of a worker on a World Cup stadium, and on the large number of workers whose deaths are attributed to "natural causes" by authorities but which are likely due to working long hours in intense heat and humidity.
Whilst Moore also highlighted that the club is committed human and labour rights commitments, the letter also states that "we remain a sporting organisations and is is important that we are not drawn into global issues on the basis of where... our fixtures take place".
We contacted Fifa to invite them to respond to Liverpool's public statement; they did not respond.

"we support your assertion that any and all unexplained deaths should be investigated thoroughly and that bereaved families should receive the justice they deserve... we also believe that employees should be treated with fairness and respect... These are the standards that we set for ourselves and by which we would hope to be judged given they fall within our own remits and responsibilities."
