The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, an international non-profit organization tracking the human rights impacts of over 9000 companies worldwide, is seeking a Researcher on Technology and Human Rights to help strengthen and deepen its technology and human rights programme and provide research support to other areas of the Resource Centre’s work.

We have more than 60 members of our Global Team based around the world who work with a wide network of human rights advocates.

  • Strengthen corporate accountability, due diligence, and effective remedy for abuse;
  • Build transparency of the advances, challenges, and abuse of human rights in business.

About the Position

The Researcher on Technology and Human Rights will work to strengthen the Resource Centre’s technology and human rights programme, with a particular focus on expanding transparency and accountability in the surveillance technology industry. This will include identifying and analysing the latest global developments related to technology and human rights, tracking the human rights performance of technology companies, seeking responses to allegations of abuse, and providing research support to other topics covered by the Resource Centre.

The Researcher will report to the Senior Project Lead & Researcher who manages the Technology and Human Rights programme and is the Regional Researcher for North America.

Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of our project focused on the role of surveillance technology companies: This includes, but is not limited to conducting research on and expanding our coverage of allegations of abuse, organizing virtual and in-person workshops focused on strengthening transparency and accountability of surveillance technology companies; and supporting efforts to further define good practice in human rights due diligence among companies in the surveillance technology industry.
  • Manage our technology and human rights portal: The Researcher will monitor the latest developments related to technology and human rights, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, automation, the gig economy, online attacks against defenders, and surveillance technology, and post these to our website to ensure it shares relevant and up-to-date information for the business and human rights field.
  • Track the human rights performance of technology companies: This includes seeking responses from companies when allegations of abuse are raised and exploring strategies to increase accountability in cases of abuse, such as engaging with investors. This also includes leading the development of 15-20 new company dashboards that provide one-stop-shops for information on leading technology companies, including broad company overviews, human rights policies, practices, and performance, allegations of abuse and company responses, and scores in relevant benchmarks.
  • Collaborate with team members to drive communication: In collaboration with the Communications team, create content related to technology and human rights to share through social media, external publications, social media, blogs and other outlets.
  • Work with the Development and Finance teams on project reporting: Be a central part of the team that delivers funder reports, and builds sustained relationships with the project’s key donor, as well as explores opportunities for increasing resources for the technology and human rights programme.
  • Provide research support to other topics covered by the Resource Centre: This will include adding new content to the website on a range of issues and regions, including the Sustainable Development Goals, business and human rights developments in North America, and other topics as needed.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

  • Human rights commitment and experience: Strong, demonstrable commitment to human rights. Minimum of three years of professional experience working to advance human rights, including work specifically focused on the private sector.
  • Knowledge of technology and human rights: At least one year of professional experience specifically focused on technology and human rights and a strong interest in this topic. Knowledge of the surveillance technology industry and experience focused on this topic highly preferred.
  • Research & analytical skills: Demonstrated research skills, with at least three years of research experience. Able to search and identify relevant information online and offline; adept at undertaking systematic data collection to a high level of detail and accuracy; ability to synthesise research and data for effective communication.
  • Team player: Demonstrated experience and ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with colleagues and partners to deliver on shared outcomes. Experience with remote, inter-disciplinary, and culturally diverse teams.
  • Language & Communication Skills: Fluent English language skills. Fluency in a second language highly preferred. Powerful writing skills and the ability to synthesise research and data for effective communication.
  • Organisation and initiative: Able to work efficiently and methodically to support the achievement of deliverables with superb attention to detail; strong prioritization skills; highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently within the agreed framework while maintaining communication with a global team in different time zones and geographies.
