Retailers Urged to Intervene to End Union-Busting Campaign at Turkish Company

Author: International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF), Published on: 3 May 2006

Neil Kearney, General Secretary of the Brussels-based International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers’ Federation...[said] “As soon as the company [Metraco] became aware that workers were unionising, management started questioning workers about their activities... Once the company had identified some of the key union members, it called in the gendarmes -the rural police force- who positioned themselves in and around the factory. Union members were then called into the office and in the presence of the commanding officer were pressured to sign letters falsely indicating they were being dismissed after repeated warnings about poor performance." The retailers and customers involved include O’Neill, Mexx [part of Liz Claiborne], Kappa, Guess, Helly Hansen, Diadora, Marzotto, Le Coq [Le Coq Sportif], Pall Mall, Gaastra [part of McGregor Fashion], Gas Jeans [part of Grotto], Jeffersen, Guru [Guru Sportswear], Napapijri, Replay [Replay Jeans], and Bestseller.
