So. Africa: Labour unions call for the closure of Sibanye's Stillwater mine after 2 mineworkers died underground following rock fall

Sibanye-Stillwater reported that two of its workers who were trapped underground on Wednesday last week at Kloof gold operations in Johannesburg, had died. The two workers were trapped in the early hours of Wednesday at Kloof's Ikamva Shaft following a fall of ground, possibly linked to a nearby seismic event. Labour unions National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) both called for the shutting down of the mining company citing health and safety issues. The death of the two mineworkers came just a week after more than 1,100 miners were trapped underground at another Sibanye facility - Beatrix gold mine in the Free State province, after a power outage at the mine caused by a severe storm in the area. They were all brought to surface safely after two nights underground. Operations at the Kloof mine have been halted until an investigation by the Department of Mineral Resources is completed. The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has launched investigations into the Sibanye-Stillwater accident.
